Weeks of practicing have passed, and teams are preparing with great excitement in anticipation for the annual Young People's Dragon Boat Regatta to be held at Canal Walk, Cape Town and Florida Lake, Gauteng on Monday 22 April 2019.
60 teams will compete and race against the clock to try to achieve their best times. Most teams are based locally in Cape Town, but this year there are also entries from teams stretching up to Saldanha (on the West Coast) and from Bredasdorp and Riversdale (on the N2), about 350kms from Cape Town.
40 enthusiastic teams from around Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Nelspruit and neighbouring country Botswana will be prepared and ready for the inaugural Gauteng Dragon Boat Regatta. This event is aligned with the Dragon Boat Regatta that has been hosted in Cape Town for many years.
22 April is a national Family Day and as such the Gauteng based Dragon Boat Regatta is also focused around this theme. Adrenaline pumped teams comprising of young people, ministers, EMS cadets, and many family members wanting to participate in the fun-filled day will go head-to-head for the coveted winners’ trophy.
A variety of other activities will also be showcased on the day. Some of these activities will comprise a group of biker enthusiasts, offering free tea and coffee and collecting jackets and beanies for the poor and needy. The Johannesburg EMS will also do a fire display and participate in the NAC strong man competition. There will also be games such as volleyball, tug of war and several other activities to contribute to the enjoyment of the day.
For hungry competitors and families, several different food stalls will be available.
You can feel the excitement on the water every weekend at the practices and teams cannot wait to showcase their talent at the Regatta. With just a few more days to go, many might be asking ... Who will be crowned the 2019 winners?
All members are welcome to attend either of the two events.
